We are very excited to be hosting a Convention at Twin Waters Resort in February 2023 with Abhijata Iyengar. The Convention will be the first gathering of the IYA community for more than 5 years, since our Adelaide Convention in 2017 and the first time a member of the Iyengar family has been to Australia since 2015 when Abhijata taught in Sydney. Following the events of the last few years, we plan to come together to reconnect with one another and to consider how to work effectively in a changing world.
Abhijata is the granddaughter of Yogacharya BKS Iyengar and was taught by him – as well as by his children Geeta and Prashant, her aunt and uncle. She has been involved with the practice and philosophy of yoga since the age of 16 and is one of the most experienced teachers at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) started by her grandfather in Pune, India. She travelled with BKS Iyengar to conventions in Russia and China and also accompanied Geeta to international conventions in England and the USA. She accompanied Geeta to her convention in Australia at Twin Waters in 2009. Abhijata’s teaching is dynamic and inspiring.
We hope you will join us to add your voice at this unique moment in time.
What is the purpose of the IYA 2023 Abhijata Convention?
There are two primary purposes of this Convention. The first is to bring together our Iyengar community after a long absence from personal interactions; the second is to celebrate the Iyengar lineage through the teachings of Abhijata Iyengar who will be visiting Australia for the first time since she taught in Sydney in 2015.
By way of background, Iyengar Yoga Australia generally hosts a Convention once every three years. However, due to the impacts of COVID we have not been able to hold a Convention (or other face-to-face events) since Adelaide in 2017. This Convention will therefore provide an important time and place to reconnect, to practice as a community, and to have real conversations about common areas of interest.
Where is the Convention being held?
The IYA 2023 Abhijata Convention will be held at the Novotel Twin Waters Resort on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. Twin Waters is located on the Maroochy River between Maroochydore and Mudjimba beaches and is a short drive from the Sunshine Coast Airport and about two hours’ drive from Brisbane Airport. The location is where Geeta Iyengar taught in 2009.

Abhijata 2023 Convention 08—12 February 2023
Novotel Twin Waters Resort
How do I get there?
You will need to make your own travel arrangements to the venue which is a short drive from the Sunshine Coast Airport and approximately two hours' drive from Brisbane airport.
If arriving into the Sunshine Coast Airport, there are bus services, taxi and shuttles you can catch from the airport to the resort.
If arriving into Brisbane, there are bus shuttle services to the Sunshine Coast from the airport, or you can catch a train from the airport and change at Roma Street Station for a connecting service. Buses also leave for the Sunshine Coast nearby the Roma Street terminal.
We recommend to book early if you want to take advantage of cheaper flights. Please also factor in commuting time from the airport if you want to arrive in time for the afternoon teaching session on Wednesday 8 February 2023. We recommend being there around noon to give yourself some time to settle in.
Do I need to book my own accommodation?
Yes. Feedback from the 2020 Convention was that participants wanted to choose their own accommodation rather than be locked in to staying at the venue. Participants can now choose to stay anywhere that is accessible to the venue. There are many options available near the resort including hotels and motels, camping grounds with cabins and camping sites, and air BnB's.
Please carefully check the refund policy of where you intend to stay as many venues are not offering refunds, including Twin Waters (refer Cancellation policy below). Twin Waters is offering the following discounted rates to participants who would like to stay at the venue:
The rooms which can be shared will have more than one bed option under the Configuration column above. Further details about the rooms are available on the Twin Waters website. If you have any further questions about the accommodation options, please call the Reservations team at Twin Waters Resort on 1800 072 277.
There are a limited number of rooms at the resort, so it is important you book in early if you intend on staying at the resort. Those that register sooner rather than later are more likely to have the room of their choice available. If you are interested in staying at Novotel Twin Waters, please complete the enclosed Twin Waters Booking Form and email it to email@example.com.
Please check carefully the refund policy of where you intend to stay as many venues are not offering refunds, including Twin Waters (refer Cancellation policy below).

— 1 x mat.
— 2 x belts.
— 2 x bricks.
— Support for shoulder stand – either two shoulder stand pads or four blankets.
